What Are Cannabidiol (CBD) Oils?
Cannabidiol is one of the numerous naturally occurring chemical compounds present in the cannabis plant. These chemical compounds are referred to as cannabinoids. Cannabidiol was first discovered in 1940 by Dr. Roger Adams and his team of scientists at the University of Illinois. Although discovered in 1940, its structure was not fully described till 1963.
Being one of numerous chemical compounds present in the cannabis plant, in order to reap the benefits of cannabidiol alone the cannabinoid will have to be extracted and isolated from all other cannabinoids. CBD oils are the result of this extraction and isolation process.
Cannabidiol oils are created by extracting CBD from the resin of the cannabis plant. These extracts are often infused into carrier oils which are usually coconut, hemp or olive oil. Cannabidiol can be extracted from the hemp plant – a non-psychoactive part of the cannabis plant family – or marijuana strains with high percentages of CBD. CBD oils extracted from the hemp plant contain notably lower concentrates of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) as opposed to oils extracted from marijuana strains.
What are the Health Benefits of CBD Oils?
Following the legalisation of cannabis and cannabis products – particularly CBD oils – worldwide, many research projects and studies have shared their research, vouching for the efficacy of these products for patients with a range of conditions. CBD oils are an effective remedy to many illnesses, and can alleviate the symptoms of others. Here are some of the illnesses CBD oils are effective at managing.
Pain and Anti-Inflammatory Disorders – CBD oils are very effective for treating and managing pain and inflammation, often as a result of other diseases such as arthritis. Patients who suffer from chronic pain can use cannabis oils to manage their symptoms.
A study using Sativex – a cannabinoid infused oral spray – maintained that pain during movement, at rest and in sleep was significantly improved in 58 individuals who suffered from rheumatoid arthritis.
Mental Health Disorders
Patients who suffer from mental health disorders are often advised to steer clear of cannabis and cannabis-derived products. Certain cannabinoids have been known to exacerbate mental health conditions. However, this is not the case with cannabidiol and products containing CBD.
In fact, a review offered by Neurotherapeutics showed that CBD held promise in the reduction of anxiety in patients with disorders such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Oxidative Stress and Related Diseases
Oxidative stress is an imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants within the human body. This imbalance is known to lead to cell and tissue damage. While oxidative stress is a natural process, many lifestyle factors such as diet and environmental conditions can rapidly hasten this process.
Cannabidiol oils contain antioxidants and when consumed these help neutralise the effects of free radicals and oxidants, thereby restoring balance internally. Studies have shown that CBD oils have neuroprotective qualities due to the antioxidants they contain.
Is CBD oil legal in Sydney?
The simple answer to this would be yes. However, it’s only possible to access CBD oils in Sydney if the buyer is a registered medical marijuana patient. Under Australian law, cannabis oils are a Schedule 4 item and cannot be accessed without the consent of the government.
Patients interested in accessing CBD oils for medicinal purposes must register with the state under the Special Access Scheme as provided by the Therapeutic Goods Act.
It is important to note that the variety of CBD oils allowed under the Special Access Scheme is restricted to those extracted from the hemp plant. CBD oils extracted from strains of marijuana remain illegal.
Hemp oils – which contain less than 0.0075% cannabidiol and 0.005% tetrahydrocannabinol – are available for mainstream purchase under the provisions of the Office of Drug Control. This is due to the fact that this percentage of CBD and THC is not considered therapeutic.
If caught in possession of cannabis oils without proper licensing, individuals could face hefty penalties.
