What is Hemp Oil?

Hemp oils are extracted from the hemp plant -- a non-psychoactive variety of Cannabis Sativa L. It is an annual, herbaceous, dioecious plant believed to have originated from Central Asia.

The term ‘hemp oil’ is a broad categorisation. All oils derived from the hemp plant are indeed hemp oils, but they vary in a number of ways. When classified based on extraction, there are two types of hemp oils:

  • Hemp Seed Oils and
  • Cannabidiol (CBD) oils.

Hemp seed oils and CBD oils

Hemp seed oils are extracted from the seed of the hemp plant. CBD oils, on the other hand, are derived from the stems and flowers of the hemp plant.

CBD oil can be extracted from the marijuana plant, but it is extracted from the hemp plant where the aim is to have minimal traces of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is a psychoactive cannabinoid — a chemical compound found in the cannabis plant.

Pets, particularly dogs, are increasingly sensitive to THC. If ingested, the cannabinoid will affect the pets adversely, inducing uncomfortable and unpleasant effects such as increased anxiety. In fact, in recent years, there have been increasing cases of pot dog emergencies -- a phenomenon that has seen a correlation of increased pot toxicity emergencies for dogs as marijuana use becomes more common and acceptable.

What does Hemp Oil do for pets?

Both hemp seed oils and CBD oils can be beneficial to the health and overall wellbeing of pets when ingested. These oils are chock full of essential vitamins and minerals that can serve as treatments for several health conditions in pets.

Here are some of the benefits of hemp oils for pets:

  • Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids

    Hemp oils — particularly hemp seed oils — are rich in omega-3 (alpha linolenic acid) and omega-6 (linolenic acid) fatty acids. Hemp oil contains a 1 to 3 ratio of omega-3 to omega-6, which is vital to the body and its functions.

    Both omega acids work to manage inflammation in the body. Inflammation is often part of the body's natural response to injury, and omega-6 acids aid in managing this inflammation in order to boost recovery.

    Omega-3 fats are beneficial to numerous body parts, including:

    • The eyes;
    • The brain;
    • The skin;
    • The heart;
    • The bones;
    • The joints, and
    • The immune system.
  • Treatment for anxiety

    Hemp oils — particularly CBD oils — have proven beneficial to the management of anxiety and its related symptoms. Pets may experience anxieties such as separation anxiety and noise phobias. CBD oils are particularly beneficial to the management of such conditions.

    There is bountiful research available on the benefits of CBD oils to humans who suffer from various forms of anxiety. For example, anxiety caused by public speaking as well as anxiety in both healthy people and people who suffer from anxiety disorders. Other conditions include panic disorders and post traumatic stress disorder.

How can I access Hemp Oils for my pets in Australia?

Hemp oils derived from hemp seeds are easily accessible in Australia. Hemp seed oils are not regarded as a therapeutic substance, but simply as a nutritional supplement.

CBD hemp oils, however, are a scheduled substance. They are not easily accessible and require special permissions in order to be used. Permissions can be granted following provisions made via the Special Access Scheme. This applies to both humans and pets. In fact, here in Australia, an upcoming pharmaceutical company, Cannpal, is focused on manufacturing cannabis-related treatments for pets.

Final Words

Hemp is a non-intoxicating crop, unlike its sister crop, marijuana. As a result, its oils lack intoxicating cannabinoids, particularly THC. This makes its oils safe for pet consumption, as there may be some concerns about how pets react to marijuana products. CBD oils can be extracted from hemp as a form of hemp oils, and CBD is known for its may therapeutic benefits. Such benefits are applicable to some pet conditions as well, making hemp oils a great alternative pet treatment.
