What is CBD Oil?

The increasing popularity of CBD (Cannabidiol) is forcing the hands of policy makers across the board to enact landmark drug policy changes.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a unique, multifunctional member of the 104 naturally-occurring compounds found in the resinous flower of cannabis. CBD extracts are often presented to end users with carriers such as hemp seed or coconut oil.

The medicinal properties of CBD have been the subject of several studies, as scientists and corporations around the globe seek to harness the potentials of the compound. Unlike THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), another highly popular cannabinoid, CBD delivers a wide array of health benefits without inducing the trademark “high” associated with marijuana.

From chronic pain to cancer and neurological ailments, CBD oil is proving highly effective in the treating a variety of health issues. The acceptance of CBD oils as treatment options continues to grow, including by the medical community, mainly due to its lack of psychoactive effects.

Who uses CBD Oil?

CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid with a slew of medical benefits. As such, it can provide the health benefits of marijuana without inducing any euphoria, unlike its THC counterpart that’s known for psychoactive effects. This makes CBD oil a favorite for medical patients with conditions ranging from chronic pain to epilepsy to cancer and AIDS.

The health benefits associated with CBD can also be obtained from certain pharmaceutical drugs. However, CBD is natural; pharmaceuticals, on the other hand, are usually associated with mind-altering and side effects.

In addition to providing the same benefits as pharmaceuticals, and more in some cases, CBD can also reverse any addictive effect caused by those pharmaceutical drugs.

What do they use it for?

The treatment of various health ails:
For many people, CBD presents a better, more organic alternative to over-the-counter and prescription drugs for the treatment of various illnesses. These include various kinds of pains, neurological diseases, glaucoma, sleep-related illnesses, and more. However, more research is still needed to shed light on how these medicinal potentials can be harnessed more effectively and consistently.

Withdrawal from drugs:
CBD oil has proved an effective deterrent that helps people quit smoking. Research shows that CBD alleviates symptoms of substance abuse disorders, including anxiety, mood swings, insomnia, and pains.

What conditions can CBD Oil treat?

Treatment for cancer patients: CBD’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant potentials help boost the health systems that control a wide array of bodily functions. These include systems associated with various kinds of pain, as well as those experienced by cancer patients.

Treatment for epilepsy: Clinical evidence suggest the effectiveness of CBD in alleviating a growing list of various types of epilepsy.

Treatment for acne:
The anti-inflammatory qualities of CBD also makes it an effective medication for acne. CBD proves to curb the secretion of sebum in the sebaceous glands of the skin, a process that gives rise to acne.

Does Australia produce it’s own CBD Oil?

The government, under the Narcotic Drugs Act 1967 (ND Act), issues licenses to vetted Australian companies to manufacture cannabis products on Australian soil. These manufacturers are required to supply cannabis products to Australians through authorized prescribers, in line with the Special Access Scheme as well as specific state regulations.

On 1st October 2017, the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) re-classified CBD oil to Schedule IV. This means the substance could be accessible to anyone based on the prescription of a doctor who is registered under the Safe Access Scheme. But obtaining CBD oil without a doctor’s prescription remains outlawed.

Final words

Cannabis remains illegal for recreational use in Australia. However, the 2016 legislation legalizing the drug for medical purposes somewhat eases access to cannabis for patients.

CBD oil has been found to be very beneficial for several conditions. Given its lack of psychoactive effects, it is an acceptable alternative to THC products, where medical communities are concerned. Its increasing popularity is the result of such acceptance, and also testimonies from medical patients whose comfort depends on the cannabis compound. With support increasing, access to any cannabis-related treatment should be eased even further.
