What is Cannabis Butter?

Cannabis butter turns everything into edibles

Nowadays, there are so many ways to consume cannabis. Aside traditional smoking and inhalation methods, cannabis consumers are now ingesting their favourite psychoactive substance in the form of food and drinks. These marijuana-infused foods and drinks are referred to as “edibles”.

When one says ‘cannabis-infused’, however, that doesn’t mean simply tossing cannabis flower, seed, or stem into any food or drink item. Doing this will make it impossible to reap any of the benefits of the psychoactive substance.

Instead, cannabis flower goes through a decarboxylation process, where it is put into items which can, in turn, be used to create other food items. These items are typically oils and butters. Cannabutter (or cannabis butter) refers to butter that’s infused with cannabis.

Who can use cannabis butter, and why use iithe first place?

How is cannabis butter made?

You don’t have to be an expert chef to make cannabis butter. You do need some patience and dedication, however — it’s a long, tedious process. The process for creating your own batch of cannabis butter can be divided into two phases:

1. The decarboxylation phaseBefore cannabis is infused into butter, it must go through the process of decarboxylation. Decarboxylation refers to a process where the cannabinoids present in the cannabis plant are “activated” through heat. Decarb your cannabis using the following two steps:

  • Prepare the oven and the cannabis
Preheat an oven to 220 degrees Fahrenheit. As the oven is being heated, break cannabis into tinier bits using your hands or a weed grinder. The consistency should be even but not too fine.
  • Put cannabis in theoven
Spread Cannabis evenly across a glass baking dish or sheet pan. Once laid out, place the dish/sheet in the oven for up to 45 minutes. Be sure to check in on the cannabis often so as to ensure it doesn’t burn. Once the leaves have changed from bright green to brown, decarboxylation is complete.

2. The infusion phase

Once cannabis has been decarbed, begin the infusion phase by following these steps:

  • Heat water and butter in saucepan
Heat 8 ounces of butter and one and a half cup of water in a medium saucepan at low heat.
  • Infuse cannabis
Once the butter has melted, add decarboxylated cannabis to the saucepan. Stir until properly infused and cover with lid.
  • Let simmer
Leave saucepan on low heat for four hours. Check regularly to ensure the butter isn’t burning and stir as necessary. Make sure temperatures do not exceed 180 degrees Fahrenheit while simmering.
  • Strain and store
After 4 hours, strain cannabis butter with cheesecloth to remove plant bits. Let butter cool to room temperature then store in a well-sealed jar. Keep refrigerated.

Final words

With cannabis butter, it’s important to be wary of dosages. Unlike traditional smoking, foods and drinks with cannabis butter do not manifest their psychoactive effects immediately. Given these factors, most cannabis consumers tend to consume a lot more cannabis butter than necessary. Cannabis butter is very potent. In order to avoid unpleasant hallucinations and paranoia, it’s best to consume cannabis butter in small doses and adjust consumption over time.
