What happens when you are exposed to weed?

Depending on the quality and amount of weed, the intake technique, as well as a person’s unique body chemistry, marijuana consumption generates varying degrees of euphoric sensations — or highs — by stimulating brain cells to discharge the compound dopamine. Whenever smoked or inhaled, the feeling of euphoria is usually almost instant. When ingested in a substance such as an edible, it takes much longer – possibly hours – for the drug to trigger the release of dopamine in the brain.

Also, different changes in the state of mind occurs upon marijuana consumption, with a state of soothing relaxation frequently being reported. Some users experience heightened sensory perception, with colors seeming progressively distinctive and noises becoming intense. For a few, pot can cause an adjusted impression of time and intensified hunger, known as the “munchies“.

“At times, reported side effects of THC include elation, anxiety, tachycardia, short-term memory recall issues, sedation, relaxation, pain relief and many more,” states A.J. Fabrizio, a marijuana chemistry expert at Terra Tech Corp, a California agricultural company focused on local farming and medical cannabis.

Other effects, according to the NIH, include:

  • Feelings of panic and fear (paranoia)
  • Hallucinations.
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Decreased ability to perform tasks that require coordination
  • Decreased interest in completing tasks.

When coming down from the high, users may feel depressed or extremely tired. While marijuana use produces a mellow experience (users are sometimes referred to as “stoners”) for some, it can heighten agitation, anxiety, insomnia and irritability, according to the NIH.

What are the benefits of cannabis compared to alcohol?

One of topics for heated debate on marijuana is how it compares to alcohol in terms of risks and benefits. src

The question of whether alcohol or marijuana is worse began generating heated debate after President Barack Obama’s contentious interview with The New Yorker magazine.

“As has been well documented, I smoked pot as a kid, and I view it as a bad habit and a vice, not very different from the cigarettes that I smoked as a young person up through a big chunk of my adult life,” Obama said during the interview. “I don’t think it is more dangerous than alcohol.”

But how do we gauge the level of risks involved in cannabis consumption vs alcohol use? Let’s take a look at some of the advantages which weed consumption provides us with over alcohol consumption:

When individuals consume excessive amounts of alcohol, the results might be deadly. The CDC reports that about 88,000 alcohol-related deaths occur every year. Binge drinking accounted for about half of these deaths. In comparison, the number of deaths related directly to the consumption of marijuana is close to zero.

Alcohol is far more likely to be associated with violence. A study on marijuana use and intimate partner violence found that couples who consumed marijuana had lower rates of intimate partner violence in the first 9 years of marriage.

Drunk Driving

Driving stoned is considered relatively safer than driving drunk – however,  it is still very dangerous. Apart from alcohol, marijuana is the most commonly detected drug in drivers involved in car accidents. One study found that marijuana increased the odds of being in a car accident by 83%.

An 83% increase in the chance of having an accident is high, however when alcohol was included, the chances of being in an auto collision reached over 2,300%.

Learning and Memory

After a long night of heavy drinking, you may not recall what happened the night before. This is frequently referred to as a “blackout.”  However, although marijuana users can have marijuana-induced memory issues, the memory loss is not as severe as blackouts from excessive alcohol consumption.

What are weed dispensaries?

A weed dispensary is a store from which weed, or smoking gear, is sold. Dispensaries are a good place for patients and recreational smokers to discover the cannabis that best suits their needs in a safe and legal environment.

Currently, 33 states in America have approved medical marijuana dispensaries, and among those, 10 states and the District of Columbia allow for recreational marijuana dispensaries. Cannabis dispensaries are protected and controlled by foundations that frequently convey all the information to develop, and consume cannabis responsibly.
